Your Child & Junk Food

I am a: Parent

Kids are trained from early to acquire the taste of fast food. Think about it, all the commercials, special deals, fun toys, etc are calculated to get children to nag their parents about eatting a burger and fries rather than goo wholesome food at home. A lot of this has to do with TV watching and the menu home. Giving children a lot of junk food at an early age is a big contributor since they grow up craving the salt or sugar taste.

What are your thoughts about it?

When I was pregnant with my oldest child, I craved chocolate milk and when I was pregnant with my second child, I craved alot of veggies.  My children do like to eat junk food, but it is rare when they get to eat any.  Many companies (i.e. McDonald's, Burger King, cereal makers, cookie makers) has geared many of their ads towards children.  Because many parents (not all) would rather buy it to keep their children quiet in a store.  My children don't ask, but then again to keep from them crying or whining all through the store, I don't go down those aisles with the junk food in them.  ;)

My children have more healthy snacks than junk food.  They would rather have fresh fruit or some raw carrots or sliced up cucumbers than ice cream and cookies.

It's true those darn ads are targeting our kids.  But we haven't had cable TV for 2 years now, so we don't get those commercials anymore.  We do, maybe once a month, go out for burgers, but rarely more than that.  It's so expensive!  And the food is just greasy.  We try to eat healthy at home, whole grain breads, lots of protein and veggies.  And we do have dessert at home, usually ice cream (natural) or fruit and yogurt.  Yummy!

We cutted all my son's unhealthy snacks for good. No sugar cereal, no potato chips of any kind, only fruits and crackers. He seems to adapt very well and he is not being fuzzy over it so far.

What a child is exposed to goes a long ways towards what their food preferences will be. I don't think there is much we can do to prevent them from liking junk food. After all, it tastes good. That's why we like it. However, if they are given lots of fruit and veggies when they are younger, they will probably also learn to appreciate and enjoy these foods. That way, an occasional trip to the junk food restaurant won't be so bad.

Yes, and when do it (He loves KFC). But he is eating a lot of fruits, sometimes he can eat 6 or 7 oranges per day! and I'm so glad he loves fruits because it is so good for him smile.gif

I subscribe to the philosophy that there is no real "junk food", but only "junk diets". My family tries to eat a healthy, balanced diet on a regular basis. An occasional splurge doesn't hurt, but it's usually done as either a special reward or as part of a celebration.
