How much do you know about Wilhelm Steinitz, an Austrian, who was well known for his tactical games that were based on chess laws that he subscribed himself to?

After losing the world title, Steinitz developed severe mental health problems and spent his last years in a number of institutions in New York, making a series of increasingly bizarre claims (including his having played - and won! - a game of chess with God conducted via an invisible telephone line). His chess activities had not yielded any great financial rewards, and he died a pauper in his adopted home city in 1900. Wilhelm/William Steinitz is buried in Brooklyn.

Steinitz Wilhelm

Its a shame that he was never able to earn any money doing what he was best at, and indeed, better than anyone else in the world. I have to wonder if the onset of mental illness wasn't the reason he lost his crown as opposed to be defeated out right. Its obvious that chess was his obsession even to the grave. Even in mental distraught, he still fantasized about chess, thinking he was playing chess with God.
