Reuters - Australian educational authorities are investigating claims that noisy school children had had their mouths taped shut to keep them quiet, officials said Tuesday.

This is very disturbing to me. I'm glad it was a volunteer and not a teacher, after all, everyone remembers children getting wrist beatings with rulers in Catholic schools in earlier days. Thank goodness it wasn't like that when I was in school, but my mother-in-law got whipped with rulers and I think that's absolutely ridiculous. There is a way to deal with children and this is not one. That volunteer should be charged even though the students and their families don't seem to be doing much about it.
Unfortunately the article has since disapeared since its posting, but I can guestimate on what the article is about. I think that's taking things to the extreme. Children will talk and seem unruly, but there are better ways to deal with it than taping their mouths closed. I've found with my experience if you can make a game out of keeping the kids quiet, they are usually a lot more willing to do so. With my group, I tell them if they can remain completely quiet for a certain amount of time with nobody talking or making noise, then the group as a whole will receive a reward of some sort. Even if it's just a few extra minutes to play a game or something. Different things work for different groups, but taping them closed is not the answer.
