I have always been an avid swimmer, but there was always some things that did not appeal to me about swimming in stagnant water like filth accumulation, oxygen in the water, etc. Now we have diseases that can kill to:

This is a tragic news, but if it's true that they contacted the disease in natural waters, I think the authorities should forbid swimming in that particular water, but unfortunately I don't know it these kind of cases can be prevented. I mean if someone wants to swim and chooses a natural stagnant water should expect bad things to happen. I personally prefer lakes formed at dams. Here the water is not stagnant, thus the danger of contacting parasites is smaller.

That is just unbelievable. Personally, I don't understand why anyone would want to swim in stagnant water -- just the smell would keep me out of it -- but I suppose young boys are more adventurous than I am.

Of the 200 known cases of Naegleria in the past 40 years, only two people have survived, health officials said. If investigators determine the boys contracted the infection from a natural body of water, the health department would work with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to post warning signs. |
