For me, if it is so bad then why even have a mascot if you cannot display it? However, how many are going to be offended at everything that is done?

You know, it never ceases to amaze me. I'm almost to the point where I laugh when I hear things like this. What will it be next. I've heard others say (and I will repeat it here) that College athletics is already having huge problems with gambling, steroid abuse, graduation rates, illegal recruiting, and entrance requirements. Yet those in charge took the time to decide that the word Indian is insulting. Nice!

NCAA SAYS TRIBAL APPROVAL IS KEY TO KEEPING NAMES
Maybe it won't be the University of Utah "Red-tailed Hawks" after all. Because of a decision by the NCAA two weeks ago, the U. appeared to be in danger of losing its traditional "Ute" nickname. However, the NCAA is backtracking a bit on its decision to ban the use of American Indian nicknames and imagery at post-season tournaments starting in February.

ATTACK OF THE NANNIES
John Leo - Polls keep showing that American Indians aren't really offended by college team nicknames such as warriors, braves, Indians, Seminoles and Fighting Illini. But many sportswriters, campus "diversity" officials, and now the National Collegiate Athletic Association think they ought to be. So the NCAA says it will ban from championship play all college teams with "hostile or abusive" nicknames and mascots.

I follow Florida State football very closely, and their team name is the Seminoles. The school actually went to the Seminole tribe before acquiring the name and asked their permission to use it. Now the NCAA has allowed Florida State to continue using the name, because the Seminole tribe was insulted that the NCAA went behind their backs and banned the use of the name. So even though the NCAA is trying to put in measures to not insult the Indians, it is actually having the opposite effect.

Why do the activists have to stick their nose in everything? There is an answer for that actually, but of course I will not go into any political rants here. I will say that such actions make Sports in general very tedious and not worth even supporting.

I think this is complete and utter BULL****. I take pride in the Florida State Seminoles, so what if some white guy thinks its not politically correct. I do not find the FSU mascot offensive at all. As malexander said, they went through great lengths to show respect to the Seminole tribe. I am more offended by the rule than the mascot. That is until I realized the rule was pretty much repealed.

Some names are very obviously offensive but don't get the play from the media. The Redskins use a name that was always considered offensive by the Indians. Really, would we say the yellowskins, blackskins, or whiteskins? But the NFL doesn't get the pressure to change like college does. Other names that in essence and spirit honor our nations Native American heritage seem to be scrutinized for that sake of argument. Football is a sport in which men battle one another under a set of rules. Its something most people love to watch and cheer for, but somehow, representing the Indian Nations doing this is offensive? I think more non-indians are offended than indians, I find it rather bizarre. I think some people just go around looking to be offended by something.
