I found a great site that gives some basic information on what iron and steel are, and why they are so important to us.
https://science.howstuffworks.com/iron.htm
The Wikipedia also has a very good entry about iron
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron
Since I work directly with iron and steel on a regular basis, I find it very interesting to learn how it is made. On a day-to-day basis, I rarely think much about how iron is refined, but I deal a lot with specific grades and types of iron and steel.
First off, I would like to say that I had no idea how vital iron is to our society and culture! Second off, I have always wondered how they extract iron ore from a rock and make it into metal! The website above is very cool and extremely informative. It really breaks it down for you in laymans terms so a student could easily understand it. I hadn't realized that iron is a prime ingredient in making electric engines either. Though I must say I should have since I did know that iron is used allot in the magnetization process.
