Who are the original native inhabitants of Maine? What are the laws governing Indigenous Peoples in Maine? Is there a specific study of the Indigenous Peoples in Maine?

I looked up a bit about the indigenous peoples in this area, and it's pretty vague when talking about before the settlers came. Apparently, the people who speak Algonquian languages were in that area. As of right now, the Penobscot tribe is an official tribe of that area, with around 2.7K enrolled people.
