These days big companies that have long been arch enemies are merging in order to survive. Part of the reason for this is they have made their businesses so big that when a catastrophe hits such as with 9/11 there just isn't enough clients to cater for all the growth / expansion they have made, so they end up shrinking.
Therefore, you either fold and count your losses or you merge and merge, but what happens if everyone merges? Where does the small man fit in? Will he have a chance at all or will he be competing against a world where monopolies are constantly being created? How do you see it?

I think if all the companies merge in each of the fields of competition, then immediately the customers would suffer from price hikes. With no one to compete with, they could raise the price of goods consumers need to what ever they wanted to. But in the end, when something happened and people couldn't afford their goods anymore, then there would be a vaccuum of goods in that market. Soon, smaller companies would pop up selling it at a lower cost to consumers who needed it. That would put the large company completely out of business and start the cycled all over again. I think at least in America, free enterprise corrects itself in the end.
