NEW ORLEANS LAUNCHES FREE WIRELESS INTERNET
Hurricane-ravaged New Orleans is starting the nation's first free wireless Internet network owned and run by a major city, a move aimed at boosting the city's stalled economy.

While I find this very cool, I hardly think that this will end up helping the poor displaced of New Orleans. The local businesses should benefit greatly from it though. Its a good step in a good direction. Bravo to Intel and others for donating equipment.
The goal of the free wireless program is to help stimulate the reconstruction of the city. Though personally, it seems a little silly to me to be building below sea level again when surrounded on three sides by a lake, a swamp, and an ocean. What will happen when hurricanes come around next year?
In a stupid twist in the previous poster's story:

I think it is great having some of our cities advancing with wireless internet. Like konquererz said, it may not help the poor too much, but a few years down the road many people can be benefited by it. The downtown area where I live has this wireless internet system and it is great. I really can't wait to see it used in all major cities, but that could be some time down the road.
