Close Church Christmas Sunday

Should churches close on Christmas Sunday?

When Christmas falls on Sunday, as it does this year, a growing number of "megachurches" across the USA are giving pastors and parishioners the day off, with no services. The custom is highly controversial and frowned on by some evangelical Christian leaders.

Well, I have always agreed with taking Christmas off as the time to spend with your family. The meaning of Christmas, no matter how you slice it or how you believe, does not mean church. If church is so much the center piece that you are not allowed to miss it, even on christmas, then you may be missing the point of christmas all together. However, the word Christmas alone implies a service. Christ Mass. So maybe it does imply the need for a service? I think you should take the time to spend with your family.

I think you can do both. Spend time with your family and attend services. In my Church (LDS) we usually have a 3 hour service but because Christmas falls on Sunday, we are having only one hour. I could perfectly choose to miss it if I want to but the fact that on Sundays is when we partake the sacrament, I do not like to miss it period whether is Christmas or not.

I am in agreement with LDS and will also add. If it is that we are celebrating the Birth of Christ, and we ought to be 'carrying' a present and 'attending' the Birthday celebration, where better to go than to His House to celebrate bearing gifts of goodwill towards all men? I think He would really appreciate it.

I also have to agree with LDS and JB. My church has decided rather than having service at 10 to start at 11 and shorten the service. We also do have a lot of our membership that have gone out of town for Christmas to spend time with family which is wonderful. I believe the main reason we have all decided to carry at least a short service rather than just an evening service is because some of our membership really doesn't have a family outside of the church. I believe that fellowship for them is the best celebration of the birth of our Savior is best well spent. We have to remember, not everyone has a family that we live with or can even really go see.
