The Story

international QUOTE
In his beautiful story, "The Gift of the Magi," O. Henry tells of a young married couple, Della and Jim, who lived in New York City in the late 1800's. It is Christmas time, and they are extremely poor. Jim's only possession of value is a beautiful, gold pocket watch, that had been his father's, and his grandfather's before that. Della's only possession of value is her long, beautiful hair; rippling and shining like a cascade of brown waters. It was late on Christmas eve before Jim returned home from work. He looked thin, and very serious. He needed a new overcoat, and he was without gloves. As Jim stepped inside the door, his eyes fixed upon Della, and an expression came into them that she could not understand. It terrified her! It was not anger, nor disapproval, nor horror, nor any of the sentiments for which she was prepared. He simply stared at her fixedly, with that peculiar expression on his face. "Jim, darling," she cried, "don't look at me that way. I had my hair cut off, and sold it, because I couldn't have lived through Christmas without giving you a present. It will grow out again- you won't mind, will you? I just had to do it. My hair grows awfully fast." On and on Della went, anxious for Jim's approval. Finally Jim seemed to come out of his trance. He enfolded Della, then drew a package from his overcoat pocket and handed it to her. "Don't make any mistake about me, Della," he said. "I don't think there's anything in the way of a haircut that could make me like you any less. But if you'll unwrap that package, you may see why you had me going awhile at first." Her nimble fingers tore at the string and paper. And then an ecstatic scream of joy; and then, alas! a quick feminine change to hysterical tears and wails. For there lay the combs- the set of combs that Della had worshipped for so long in a Broadway window. Beautiful combs, pure tortoise shell, with jeweled rims- just the shade to wear in the beautiful, vanished hair. They were expensive combs, she knew, and her heart had simply craved and yearned over them, without the least hope of possession. And now they were hers; but the tresses that should have been adorned with the coveted combs were gone. Still, she hugged them to her bosom, and at length she was able to look up with dim eyes and a smile, and say, "My hair grows really fast, Jim!" Jim had not yet seen his beautiful present. She held it out to him, eagerly, upon her open palm. It was a platinum watch chain; simple in design, properly proclaiming its value by substance alone. It was even worthy of the watch. The dull precious metal seemed to flash with a reflection of her bright and ardent spirit. "Isn't it a dandy, Jim? I hunted allover town to find it. You'll have to look at the time a hundred times a day, now. Give me your watch. I want to see how it looks on it." Only silence met her request. Finally Jim said, "I can't, Della. I sold the watch to buy your combs!"

The Answers:

international QUOTE
1. Romans (Luke 2:1).

2. They followed the direction of an angel (Luke 2: 12).

3. In a home in Bethlehem (Matthew 2: 11).

4. No one else (Matthew 2:2).

5. We don't know. We only know that there were three gifts (Matthew 2:1).

6. All of the children (male and female) under three years of age (Matthew 2: 16). According

To Jewish custom at that time, children were considered to be two until their 3rd birthday. Fortunately, probably no more than 20 or so were killed because it was a small village, and so many children died in infancy.
