NEWINGTON, Conn. - Sarah Appleton is hard-pressed to remember a time growing up when she didn't play hockey with boys. The lack of good girls ice hockey programs forced her to play on boys teams until she was 13. Now, she's 18, and that's no longer necessary.

Hockey Ice Women
I think it's wonderful that women's hockey is starting to take off. For so long different sports were considered "man sports" and any woman who attempted to participate were laughed at. Hockey is definately one of those sports that has been considered to be a "man" sport. It's great to see the support being pushed behind women's hockey. The article said that since 1990 the number of girls participating has grown from a little over 6,000 to well over 50,000. That's huge! Hopefully it will continued to grow and be supported by society.
