Her behavior was unacceptable and she should be suspended for a while. What in the world she was thinking? The kid is only 5 years old!

Am I to believe she taped him and his mouth shut because he licked the classroom door? If I were one of the parents I would be very upset myself. I think a psychological evaluation is also in order, in addition to some type of punishment, other than going on sick leave.

I had complete deja vu when I read the title of this thread. How many times has a teacher been suspended for taping a child's mouth closed? I know this isn't the first instance, granted I have to admit that is the most unique reason I have heard yet. I will admit that I have girls at work that I would love to tape their mouths closed, but I would not seriously do it. Well, not in a serious fashion. I have done so in a joking manner with them if I was taping something I would grab a small piece and stick it to their mouth. However, it was most definately not done in a serious, angry mode, and they knew it, and I didn't stick it on there hard at all. It just amazes me how teachers these days lose their self control and make these poor decisions. I do agree that she should not be on sick leave, because I believe that makes her eligable for getting paid. When a teacher does something wrong, they should not get paid to sit at home.

Not only did she tape his mouth closed, but she tied him to a chair. I think that's where my biggest issue comes in. You do not restrain a child like that. That's a pretty traumatic situation for a child to be tied to a chair with his mouth closed. What's sad about it is that he said the other kids laughed at him, and now he's ashamed and embarassed and doesn't want to think about that day. Looking at the picture...I wanted to give him a big ol' hug cause he is absolutely adorable. sad.gif

Well, take this counsel with love wink.gif You should think twice in doing that again even though you did it in a joking manner. As a teacher, I try to be extremely careful on how I treat the kids because nowdays they go to their parents and exaggerate the version of the event and since you did in fact used a small piece of tape, you may get in trouble with the wrong set of parents and they may even sue you. It happens!

What this teacher did was so awful wrong! The kid is 5 years old. She was not obviously thinking. She should be suspended without pay.

I'm not too worried about it because I'm very careful with the girls I do joke around with. We get to know them so well, and I know which girls are pranksters and which are the drama queens. Usually they just take it off them and put it on my cheek, and then we get into a tape war. I've walked around with tape on my back for an hour and a half and didn't know it.

I think there's definately a difference in how things of this nature are approached. What she did was inexcusable. Personally, I think a situation like that should be followed up with a reprimand on her record, and I think she needs to be excused from that school. That child is going to think about what she did to him everytime he walks down that hallway and sees her, if she returns.
