I live in a Midwest town in the US and unfortunately there aren't a large number of African Americans who live here. My daughter has been getting a lot of assignments in school that pertain to African-American history month, and so I've been involved in helping her research for these projects. One of the assignments had her writing a short paper on discrimination, and in researching this, we found a lot of historical data on how African-Americans were discriminated against, and continue to be discriminated against, even though it may not be as overt as it was in the past. It made me think a lot of my own experiences with discrimination, and I am glad to see that young children are being shown why African-American history month is an important part of US culture and history.
