New MBAs finding education pays off big time

Salaries and signing bonuses of fresh graduates took a double-digit jump in 2005 to a record average $106,000 and signaled an end to the "perfect storm" of sour news this decade that included the dot-com bust, the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and a subsequent recession, said Dave Wilson, president of the Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC) that oversees the test for aspiring graduate students in business. Corporate recruiters had disappeared from campuses. But, Wilson reports, "The MBA is back as the currency of intellectual capital."

My belief is that an MBA is beneficial only in a certain subset of careers. I see so many coworkers who feel it necessary to obtain that hallowed MBA so that they can feel they have an edge on others, but the entire time they are pursuing the MBA, their actual 'work' is being affected. My belief is you get your initial degree (associate or bachelors) to prove to your potential employer that you have what it takes. Once hired on, only go after the advanced degrees if you really see that it will help or further your career. In IT, I just don't see an MBA as helping anyone, and employers who feel their employees need to have these to move upward are creating false hopes, in my opinion.
