Your parents would have been smart to tell you to to “eat your broccoli.” But what about broccoli sprouts? Or broccoli supplements? Broccoli and related vegetables in the Brassica family are loaded with health-promoting compounds known as phenolics. Researchers have identified a large number of candidate genes controlling phenolic compound accumulation in broccoli. These genes will be used in future breeding programs to pack even more phenolic compounds into broccoli and other Brassica vegetables. Ref. Source 9u.
Boosting potency of broccoli-related compound for age-related macular degeneration
Researchers boosted the potency of a broccoli-related compound by 10 times and identified it as a possible treatment for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of vision loss affecting more than 10 million older Americans. The research also highlights the role of lipid metabolism in maintaining the health of the retina, reporting that palmitoleic acid also had protective effects on retinal cells in culture and in mice. Ammonium nitrogen input increases the synthesis of anticarcinogenic compounds in broccoli
In the quest for less contaminating fertilizing strategies, a study has explored the use of ammonium-based fertilizers, less widely used than the nitrate for fertilizing owing to the reduced growth displayed by the plants. The comparison between these two sources of nitrogen has revealed a higher amount of glucosinolates in the case of ammonium nutrition. This gives the plants greater insecticidal capacity and this is of great interest nutritionally as these are anticarcinogenic substances. Ref. Source 4f.
Like it or not: Broccoli may be good for the gut. For the broccoli haters of the world, researchers may have more bad news: the vegetable may also help promote a healthy gut. Source 2e.
