In my opinion, Romania is not ready to join the European Union. Not only the mentality of the people must change, but our economy is not sufficiently developed to face western competition. Not to mention the other flows - on the first place I would mention the problems related to justice.

I get daily briefings about news from Romania with Politics being top of the reports and one thing I have noticed is the number of politicians either arrested, in prison or in court. Is corruption there at a high level because of a lack of checks and balances?

The corruption in our country is at a very high level. I mean politicians at top levels are/were involved in "dubious" businesses. The corruption reached a peak at the end of the last legislature (2000-2004); the prime minister was considered by many from the civil society some kind of head of mafia ... the state was somehow going towards a mafiotic(?) state. How did we end up there? My opinion is that after 45 years of communism the whole society is perverted. But this is something general. In particular, the PSD government (the previous government) "managed" to drive the corruption to those proportions by destroying the judicial system. The whole system was ruined with the introduction of confuse laws, the promotion of controllable/puppet-like judges and the obstruction of prosecutors (those - few - who were willing to do their job).

Offtopic but, One of those prosecutors - I think Panait was his name - was pushed to commit suicide. The new Minister of Justice ordered a re-opening of that case.

What you see now (arrests, trials etc.) are the result of the 2004 elections - the new government and especially the new president are trying to do something. I'm not so naive to believe that a miracle is going to happen, but I haven't lost (totally) my faith. We have a good new minister of Justice and I hope she will do something in order to reform an old rusted judicial system.

PM announces Govt's resignation, starts proceedings for early elections

Romania is bracing up for snap election, as the Government yesterday took a step forward to the denouement, which is calling Romanians to the polls, most likely in October this autumn. The bombshell dropped unexpectedly, since both the President and the Prime Minister appeared to have discarded long ago the idea of snap election.

My opinion - it's the right thing to do. Why? You can't go full speed with the brakes on.

The actual government solution (PD+PNL+PC+UDMR) is too much of a compromise. After the new election, I'm sure the D.A. alliance (PNL+PD) should manage to pass through the newly formed Parliament, their own government, without the "immoral solution - PC" and maybe, but not necessary without UDMR.

Offtopic but, President Basescu called PC (Conservator Party) - ex-PUR (Humanist Party) an immoral solution because they (PC) went to elections allied with PSD and after Mr. Basescu (PD - Democrat Party) won the presidency, PC turn their back on PSD to form the government, but not before voting proPSD for the presidency of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies. I could write a novel on the betrayals of these guys
