If you are in the USA and want to start a new hobby in the HAM radio realmn then its recommended that you first go with the Technician class amateur radio license.
Amateurs who enter the hobby as Technicians do so by passing a 35 question, multiple choice exam. The exam covers basic regulations, operation practices, and electronics theory, with a focus on VHF and UHF applications. Technician Class operators are licensed to use all amateur VHF and UHF frequencies above 50 MHz. Technicians who pass a 5 WPM Morse code exam are able to transmit limited power outputs on certain HF frequencies. "Technicians with HF" May operate on 80, 40, and 15 meter amateur bands using CW or Morse Code, and on the 10 meter band using CW, voice, and digital modes.
The book attached is a Tech class learning book that can be obtained through most Radio Shack outlets.
In the USA the most popular license for beginners is the Technician Class license, which requires only a 35 multiple-choice question written examination. The next step above that is the Technician Class license (Radio privileges above 30 megahertz (MHz). These privileges include the very popular 2-meter band. In trinidad there is one standard class to begin with and the exams come from the UK.
