MONSERRAT VOLCANO ERUPTS
A volcano on the Caribbean island of Montserrat erupted Saturday, sending burning gas, volcanic rock and ashes careening down the mountain slopes and into the sea.

It sounds like this eruption was a good thing. Had it not erupted, something much worse could have happened.

I hadn't realized that volcanic eruptions can be beneficial to surrounding areas, I always thought it was purely destructive. In this case, it let out pressure that could have caused a much bigger catastrophe.
