From Me To Xp

From ME to XP

You can see my Blog for more info, but basically I had to upgrade and found it to be a hardship. My advice:

1. Back up all your important stuff
2. Clean out your harddrive or in other words do an fdisk when XP recommends to do so

Trying to install XP over ME is a bad idea - the way each of them handles files is different. You will find a lot of your stuff unavailable in XP or missing (until you do a search to see where XP moved it).

What I Do Not Understand...

I know XP handles memory usage similar to how NT used to work, but is there not a way to measure system resources besides looking at memory? In other words, I want to know how close I am to crashing because I am generally a power user. In ME I could put on cacheman and would get a reading like: 60% 70% 60% as a measurement of how I am doing, with the middle number going down with each program loaded. When it got down to 5% you know a crash is coming. My understanding is that XP can increase that percentage without having to restart as is done in XP (cache).

What I Hate

Having to now look at installing SP2, it should be optional, not a requirement. I cannot believe USB 2.0 works on ME, but not with XP (unless you have SP2).

Sorry about your experience so far. Its not supposed to be that difficult, but it ends up being that way for many. But I can give you a tip on how to monitor system performance on XP.

Click 'Start' button

go 'run' and click it

in that box type 'perfmon'

This brings up the performance monitor.

in the main box to the right, 'right click' and select add counters and you can decide which resources to monitor. You may pick very specifics like cpu clock cycles or very broad like total memory usage. Its very helpful.

Well I am enjoying it after all with my main love is the way it handles memory. I do not have to restart to completely clear the cache as in ME, so that is a good thing.
