Christmas Argentina

Hi, I need some help please. My daughter is doing a school project about Christmas in Argentina and there's a few things that we haven't been able to find.

One thing is that we're looking for a dessert, something that would be easy to serve to her classmates. I was thinking a type of cookie or something that can be cut up into small pieces. I'd appreciate a good recipe if anyone has one!

Another thing we're looking for is Christmas crafts. She has to list a few and be able to make one. Nothing too complicated would be great! Are their any crafters here?

I appreciate your help and time!

The most popular desserts we have for Christmas in Argentina are:

1. Fruit cocktail (Bananas, melon, peaches, apples, all sort of fruits you can think of) cut it in small pieces with a nice juice on it or cider. Whipped cream is a MUST. You just serve it in small bowls with a generous scoop of whipped cream on top.

2. "Pan Dulce" ("Sweet Bread") Most people just buy it. It is the soft type not the hard and heavy one.

3. Not necessarily a dessert but we eat it after dinner: Chestnuts and almonds.

4. "Turron" A nougat confection made of honey, sugar, and egg white, coated in crushed, toasted almonds, and usually shaped into a rectangular tablet. Delicious!

I will post a link to a couple of recipes in the recipe section and I'll put a link in your intro thread.

Crafts? The same than everywhere! We do not have any special one. One thing your daughter should mention as an interesting thing is that just like in the USA kids put the Christmas boots, Argentine kids leave their real shoes out by the tree for "Santa" To see it. They do not leave cookies or milk.

I hope it helps! If anything else come to my mind, I would surely update this thread, so feel free to ask any more questions.

Christmas Argentina

Thank you for your help! It's greatly appreciated. My daughter chose Argentina and we're both enjoying what we're learning.

One more thing too....is there any particular or favorite Christmas song or are they the same as what we'd hear here in the US?

When she makes her presentation on the 18th, I'll take a pic of her display and if I can learn how to post it, I will!

Have a great day,

Regina

Same songs I would say...it is not a common thing "Caroling" In Argentina.

Rather off topic, but...
I just added a recipe for Panettone, also referred to as "Pan Dulce"

Argentina Christmas

I spent the Christmas of '83 in Santa Fe, Argentina as an LDS missionary. I don't remember a lot of details because: a) it was more than 20 years ago; and cool.gif I had some sort of 24-hour virus with a high fever and so the whole experience was through a fog and very surreal.

I do remember that it was very hot. Late December in the Argentina is like late June in the United States or Europe.

The main part of the celebration was on Christmas Eve rather than on Christmas day. We were renting a room (actually the garage) in the house of a widow we knew as "la Coca". She had a lot of extended family that came over for the celebration and we were invited to participate in the festivities as well. I remember the teenage boys having a lot of large fire crackers (think M-80) that they lit off and threw at each other. The highlight of the celebration was a large meal that was served at around midnight. If I remember correctly, the main course was chicken, roasted on an open fire in the backyard.

I don't remember a lot of gift giving. I do remember that several weeks later there is a celebration known as "Día del los Reyes Magos" (Day of the Wise Men), where the children put there shoes outside the door overnight in hopes that the wise men will leave gifts in them as they pass by on their way to visit the Christ child. I find this tradition much more appropriate to the true meaning of the holiday than the Santa Claus tradition.

I also remember noticing that the festivities associated with Easter seemed to be more important that those associated with Christmas - something I also found to be very appropriate.

Wow, that's late but yes, most Argentinians eat dinner around 9 or 10pm, At midnight on Christmas Eve is "El brindis" (The toast) where people drink cider and toast with family and friends and make good wishes.
