Nokia Opens Up Bluetooth Competitor

Looking to take on Bluetooth, Nokia said Tuesday it was open-sourcing its "Wibree" wireless technology. According to the company, Wibree uses a fraction of the power of other radio solutions, and is easily integrated with Bluetooth.

Nokia says Wibree is the first open technology to allow connectivity between computers and cell phones and button-cell powered devices. This could include toys and watches, among other items. Similar technologies require too much energy to be used on low-power devices.

Interesting! I'll be watching where this goes in the coming months. Anyone using Bluetooth now?

I haven't really gotten into Bluetooth, mostly because it is simply not cost effective. But an open source product would be inherently less expensive and would likely develop faster than Bluetooth did. I think this will be great for competition and will drive the wireless revolution further towards being standard for everyone.

I have used bluetooth for quite some time now and have been over all pleased with it. I must agree however it is still rather pricey. I am happy to see someone challenging the market for this.

*I have to admit that using my bluetooth headset with my phone caused my telephone battery to run down much quicker than normal.

I have to say this could be a good device if it works just as good with the fraction of the power which is my main complaint with Bluetooth small handle devices which is powered by Litium.

The Connectivity and data tranfers aren't the problem, I would get about 1/2 of and hour talk time on my wireless phone if connected to my wireless headset.
before the battery completely discharges, things like this so makes me not care to be and early innovator...smile.gif
