From what I heard it is all psychological, people who try to dig deeper and deeper into their ancestry are concerned that they will be left as an unknown in the future if they do not record the past.

I don't think that this is the case at all!
I think it's more a point of interest for people wanting to know where they've come from, and interesting facts about how their ancestors led their lives and how they earned a living!
I guess for some it may also be an added bonus if they find any missing relatives out there!
