Nice Score, But No Party For You!

A integrated school holds a party in celebration for the African (perhaps they are African-English) and Carribean (perhaps they are Carribean-English) students that performed well on their SAT's. The arguement is to dispel the idea that only white children are smart enough to do well on the test. The only problem: the people to be influenced by the results (I am assuming the white parents) are not invited.

It truly would be unthinkable if this were done the other way around, but what is your opinion?

You Party No Score Nice

I understand the intent of it yet I see it as unnecessary and a dangerous thing that can cause a gap between black and white kids. The white ones needs AS MUCH AS RECOGNITION as the black kids. There should be no difference. They are indirectly teaching the black kids the following:

1. They are somehow "different".

2. Later in life, if things do not go their way, they can make excuses based on their race.

3. They are treating being black as it is a mental disability.

And what are they teaching to the white kids?

1. You have to be black to get some sort of recognition.

2. Creates jealousy.

3. Possibly, it creates race issues that never existed before.

And the most interesting thing, if it was the other way around, they will be shouting "discrimination" because comes from white folks and probably those awards wouldn't have lasted 10 years.

I really would hope that the white students would not take that away from this situation. Initially, I kind of thought that no one would jump to that conclusion if you were white, but then I thought about my own history and I unfortunately have to say it is entirely possible.

I was raised on a predominantly black street. All of my friends were black and when I was young, I didn't really see in terms of color. A film of my 7th birthday showed me as the only white kid on the reel. I never really had a feeling it was they and us (white and black) until I started applying for scholarships to go to college. It was then I was hit hard with the reality that I was a white applicant from a middle income caucasian family that basically equated to putting a big rubber stamp on applications of "Need Not Apply". Grants and scholarships were not available to me, but if I were a minority, I would have done pretty well in the money catagory and it would have made it much easier to go to school. I ended up washing cars, shoveling driveways (snow time), cutting grass and making pizzas to pay for college. I think the effort made me appreciate my education even more than had I been given money, but that is probably me justifying it to myself.

I can say that that experience did start to show me that I was not entitled to the same opportunities as everyone else. Life outside of school has unfortunately shown me nothing different to disprove that notion. I know that we are righting the wrongs of the past, but this strategy could setup problems for the future.
