
What is 4G technology?
Successive generations of mobile phone technology aren't as clear as they sound. Sure, everyone agrees the first generation was the age of the analogue cellphone and the arrival of digital cellphones ushered in the second generation. But the transition to the third generation was not as clear cut, with companies eager to market as 3G what others were calling 2G or 2.5. Now 3G is entrenched something similar is happening with 4G. Urgh. The "Generations" of cellphone speeds are very confusing. An episode from Techstuff by How Stuff Works tries to explain it. Basically, the official standards for 4G speeds are so high, that all the cellphone providers chose to come up with their own definition. Therefore, "4G LTE" is not true 4G as defined internationally. It's speed is more like 3.5G
