I think I managed the test well enough though it has to be shipped to get marked. I currently am a energy services tech. I used to deal with power quality issues and billing complaints along with energy conservation. Then we deregulated the electrical world here and I was told to go sit at the desk as we have no retail arm. So that means we can not do anything the private world does for free and with no retail arm we can not charge for this service. So I have been a desk jockey for 5 years looking after our interval metered accounts. Boooooooriiiiing!

I like being in the field so a meter shop job came up in the company but in the outside union so I have to switch locals which means I have to do all the testing and start as one would if they applied from the outside. I would be wiring up and installing the electrical meters in my town. It is same pay rate as my current job but 2.5 hours longer a week. Also would include running the trouble truck and taking after hours calls once a month well actually 13 weeks a year. With the standby by pay and such it is 20k plus more a year. Also I would get my journeyman ticket. So employment is a guarantee. A big bonus to me.

Right now I am looking at the smart metering entering my world and that is getting farmed out. So it would be just time before what I do is farmed out as well I think. Also we are looking at amalgamation some point in the next ten year I have 17 to go. So the security of the metering tech is nice. Getting back out in the world is a nice bit for me as well.

I smoked the interview and I am pretty sure the testing is a none issue now I have to bargain to get a wage that starts close to mine now to make the transition easier. I have always worked verifying meter and testing them so I have a good background to help me there the only question is if management can be convinced I am a good fit. We have 3 senior techs one leaves Sept the next in 5 years. That leave one experienced tech and two noobs. If I can get in I will advance quicker then a noob with my back ground. So at least you have a tech of 3 years done schooling before the 5 year guy leaves. I just have to sell that concept to them. Also they will be short staffed on the trouble truck in Sept when the senior man leaves. I could be trained for that officially in 6 months. With an April start I would keep the system running seamless.

Gotta love politics. To go 65k to 85-100 k annually is a huge jump to me and with the boys getting closer to college/university it would help. Also our over time is pensionable if consistent over a 3 year run. I could foresee being able to retire with the same annual income I have now, rather then 70% of it.

Just love politics. Might be up to 3 weeks before I see a mark I hope for 90% plus.

*frowns* maybe but we are thinking of getting high speed so might see more on off peak hours. That might be a good thing.

Congratulations for doing well on your testing, krakyn, and for "smoking" the interview! That's how it's done, for sure! You sound like you've done your research for what you want, and I hope that it comes through for you. Change seems to be in the air for many of us

Thanks farseer I hope it goes well my supervisor just asked to get them marking expedited so that is a good sign. As I might be able to get 39 month credit on the apprentice then. I might get 4 year pay but be in the 3 year on hours of training it is hard to say.

If you can get the 39 month jump that would be great. It is nice to have more pay if you can get it.
