Explorer.exe
Any guesses as to why Explorer.exe would cause high CPU usage when in use? Sometimes it maxes out for simple tasks. I have searched this on the net, but no one can pinpoint a real reason, however I do find that many of the problems can be traced back to SP2 update.

I found a few spots that talk about this problem, but how much CPU is being used by explorer.exe and have you tried to startup up without being physically connected to the net (after your computer is started up then try to add your interenet connection)?
Although connecting to the net does use resources I find that it is returned once the connection is established. By the way, I did do a system scan and registry clean. I also checked defrag and all is well. I believe some of the possible problems has to do with FireFox 2, it is more of a resource hog that the older version and I find myself having to restart it often when looking at files using Explorer. If Explorer reaches 96% CPU then I usually stop it through task manager and restart it again.
Wow...not familiar with Firefox, but the 4.6GHz minimum processor requirement is pretty significant! What I was seeing on the net had to do with viruses and would basically take up 100% of the CPU. There was no mention of Firefox on the sites. However, it sounds as though you scanned already, so it doesn't look like I will be of much help.
This reminds me that I need an upgrade in computer. I am only clocked at 1GHz...WAY behind the times!
Having done more investigation I realize that when I do this Explorer.exe shoots through the roof:
Open Explorere.exe look for one of my son's cartoons (or any movie) and double click on it. When the movie viewer starts to load I get the symptoms. Now, if I open the movie viewer first (WMP or Nero Viewer) and then drag the movie to be viewed to the movie viewer then everything is normal. Does that not seem weird?
That is odd! Is there any chance of replacing that explorer.exe file with a fresh one? It sounds like something may have been altered in that file. When I was checking on the net, that file seems to be corrupted with viruses at times that consume a lot of CPU.
