Ghengis Khan
I was watching a documentary about Ghengis Khan and learned why he became the way he was. His father was poisoned by another rival tribe when he was only nine. In his childhood he killed another boy because he refused to share his food with others.
His wife was kidnapped and raped by a rival tribe (he did later get her back by destroying that tribe when he was 20). It is interesting to note that wife stealing was common back then.
His best friend betrayed him and after an ill prepared war that Ghengis lost to him - his former friend took the captured generals and boiled them alive.

Some other interesting facts about Ghengis Khan is that his name is actually Chengis, it has been mistranslated from and early time. In Mongolia you can see it spelled this way, not the other way. As well, Chengis Khan had the largest land empire ever seen on this planet. Not even Alexander the Great or the mighty Roman Empire held as much land as Khan. In fact, it was this empire that connected the east to the west. If his empire had not existed, things may not be the same as they are.
