Toddler Dies After Booster Injection
As a mom of a 8 month old baby this is VERY scary. 
I hope they can investigate the matter properly and ensure this never happens again. Why did the mother took so long to take the kid to the hospital if he did not eat for 2 or 3 days! Sad, very sad.

| The mother of 18-month-old Ezekiel Kintiaba, whose unexpected death she is still reeling from, is demanding that an investigation be launched into the circumstances which caused her son's death on March 15. Visiting the Express on Sunday, Makeda Kintiaba, of Bournes Road, St James, had tears in her eyes as she spoke of her only child. Described by Makeda and her step-father, Dexter Brown, as a "bundle of joy who never fretted or fussed", she explained that her troubles with the tot began after she took Ezekiel for his one-year booster injection at the St James Health Clinic on the morning of March 1. Claiming that the nurse who administered the injection had told her that Ezekiel would become a "little irritated and even run a fever", Makeda said she was told not to worry, as this was normal and sometimes occurred. Admitting that Ezekiel had a fever and was constantly crying, Makeda said she had to force-feed her son when he stopped eating approximately two or three days after being given the injection. After catching a cold during that time, Makeda and Brown said Ezekiel's refusal to eat was attributed to the flu, and they later discovered that he had a sore throat which further prevented him from eating. Noticing that her son had begun losing weight, Makeda said she discussed the idea of taking him to the hospital, but decided against it when he ate an entire meal of mashed potatoes she had prepared for him the night before he died. On the morning that Ezekiel died, Brown said he fed him a bottle of freshly squeezed orange juice, and after playing with him, he noticed the baby was breathing funny and his eyes were crossed. After realising something was wrong, the parents rushed him to the Port of Spain General Hospital. Makeda said doctors at first thought it was a case of gastroenteritis and dehydration. However, they soon revised their original diagnosis after learning about the booster injection. It was soon after that the family were informed of Ezekiel's death... |

Sad very sad. I thought every one understood that when a child is given a booster there is a chance of severe side effects (including death). But I think in this case it is the parents who need to be held responsible. My youngest reacted severely to the shot he received just before starting school. we rushed out to the doctor's asap. After a shot of antihistamine all was well but if would have waited I am sure much worse would have resulted.
A lady I work with has a child who now will not exceed the mental capacity of a two year old due to the measle shot he received at 6 months. Here lawyer told her the odds are 1 in six million that this could happen. So beware! I know the chicken pox shot they give can have dire results. My doctor told us our child would be likely to die from the shot then the worst case of chickenpox out there!
My wife is allergic to eggs and many of these shots we give children are egg based so beware and know what you are getting into before saying ok go ahead.

Now that is scary. Actually I was not aware that the risk is so great. The nurses here simply say something to the effect of "He may get a fever from this for a couple of days" and nothing more. Maybe I need to do more research on this and post it in the Medical Board.

Well, it seems like there are mix reactions and opinions. A UWI lecturer states "Vaccine not cause of baby's death".

| NO vaccines in the Expanded Programme of Immunisation in the public health sector could have caused the tragic death of 18-month-old Ezekiel Kintiaba, says a senior lecturer in paediatrics at the University of the West Indies, Dr Beni Balkaran. Balkaran, speaking to the Express in a telephone interview yesterday, said that neither a wrong shot of another vaccine or increased dosage could have led to the child's death. This was the belief of the child's mother Makeda Kintiaba who suggested the death of her only child was linked to his one-year booster injection he received at the St James Health Clinic on March 1. The official cause of death was listed as Encephalopathy-a disease of the brain that alters brain function or structure. She said that an autopsy showed that Ezekiel's brain had been "unduly swollen and contained fluid" and that his central nervous system had shut down. Balkaran said that the symptoms pointed to some kind of illness and the two-week duration of time was unusual for it to have been caused by the vaccine, as adverse effects usually happened within the same day or a few days afterward... |
