Empedecoles made a major impact on the world, though his piteous suicide is what I remember him for.
Empedecoles was the man who first created the four elements:
Fire
Water
Air
Earth
These four elements have been a large impact on fantasy and everything for that matter, though little credit is given to him. Do you know of any philosophers whose impact still remain today, without any credit given?
I have to admit, I have never heard of this philosopher, but I will now look up some of his works. But I know a couple philosophers who were "religious philosophers" of their time, but often forgotten and passed as merely religious speakers. The early christian philosopher/apologist Origin wrote many different philosophical works regarding the spirit, the spirit of Christ, and its relationship to the world around us. Much of his work was on how our spirit reacts with the world around us, nature.
Philo of Alexandria, the Jewish philosopher did much to try to bring his own traditional Judaism into harmony with Greek philosophy and Greek enlightenment teachings. Most Jews and non-Jews alike have never heard of this widely traveled and widely read (in his day) philosopher.
Empedecoles?
I have also not heard of this person.
I can tell you that the elemental gods were in favour during the earlest known civilizations, Summeria notwithstanding.
Empedecoles sounds Greek. The rise of the Greek golden age took place centuries after the Summerians were dust.
Of course, I stand to be corrected, because I'm not a historian.
