Young Lady...get Right Back On That Street Corner! - Page 2

Rebellion phase is one thing, this kid steals. Does every teen that goes through the rebellion years steal? The girl obviously has unresolved issues and serious ones, putting a sign on her that says that she is a thief and a liar is NOT going to help to solve whatever issues she has. Counseling is what this FAMILY needs, and notice I say FAMILY and NOT the girl alone because this is obviously a family issue.

Stealing from parents is quite common among rebellious teens. Our family enjoyed a few years of counselling to no avail. The one thing that finally did work was time. Someone grew up. Least that is what she says today. She also said the counselling was all correct, but like a alcoholic, you have to want to fix things. If you still want to be a misunderstood rebellious teen, only time will fix the issue, because you can only be a teen for 7 years (now you can be rebellious in your twenties too!). It is quite unfortunate for my sister, because she never got to tell her father how sorry she was for causing so much trouble for so many years and what was rebellious rage so many years ago is now replace with guilt. However, it took motherhood to finally make her grow up. She is now a great mother of 4 children.

Now, I actually asked my sister about this punishment. She said that one of two things would have probably happened as a result. Since she admits to having been very concerned about her image when she was a teen, she said that whatever behaviour got this punishment would have probably been stopped. Being clever, she said she would have looked for any way possible to sneak around this in a different way. Basically, this door is closed...look for another. So the behaviour would have been modified, but the issues unchanged. The other thing that could have happened would be that some of her friends might say something to her and it would blow up into a friendship ending argument. Being that other teens are the only ones capable of understanding the teenage rebellion, she would have become even more of a handful without friends. But she says that even if her friends would have said something, they had fights before and always got over it, so that would probably just blow over too.

I asked her a couple other things too. She said it wasn't the sign that would have been the worst part of the punishment, it would be the possibility of her friends seeing her or someone that might recognize her. Picking up trash on the side of the road would have been equally is painful. Now I couldn't help myself and had to ask one more question. If you were put out on the corner and were collecting for a charity would that be as bad? She said definitely... Then I asked her...what if part of the punishment required that you wear a outfit that only color coordinating challenged person could put together. She told me I was mean! Very mean! laugh.gif and OH yeah...that would get quick modification of behavior. She still said she would have been looking at another door, but said that would definitely get a immediate stoppage of whatever was causing that punishment.

Ok I agree with this LDS. But suppose they have already tried counselling and it did not work, then what?

Hmm very interesting Vincenzo! I like this idea of forcing the rebellious teenager to collect money for charity. However, the downside of this would be, suppose the teen decided to steal the money that was collected? Maybe collecting old, used clothes might be better. I started laughing when I read the part about wearing clothes that do not match. Excellent! All teens (and some adults too) would die if they were seen by their peers in clothes, where the colours do not match. However, it would be a bit of a challenge, to actually force the teen to wear the clothes (where the colours do not match). How do you put the clothes on the teen and expect the teen to leave the clothes on? A natural reaction would be for the teen to scream, throw a tantrum, pull the clothes off or refuse to leave the house wearing the clothes assigned to him/her. I have to admit though, what you have proposed are better than wearing the sign!

What some people are not looking at is the childs point of veiw only the parents and I think it will be a very long time before the child forgives and forgets and thats if they ever do. This sort of punishment is even worse than a beating for some children for the fact it can destroy there social status and can emotionally scar them for life. Punishment this sever is not acceptable for a child and the parent should take on some of the blame because that is where a childs majority of discipline and knowing right from wrong come from. Most hard criminals can get off better than this with only jail time where they get an easy existence and can get out with out many people knowing they were in.
