No Respect For The Disabled In T&T
First we have to hear about a disable man taking the State to court to allow public buildings accessible to the physically challenged and then I read this that made me very upset, how can some people laugh and ridicule another human being in this manner? Some Trinidadians can be so idle and ignorant!

I am a person living with a disability, a speech impediment, which has been my constant companion from birth. Like all the other millions of persons with disabilities, it was not a conscious choice. I certainly did not anticipate the deprecation which I received from the service personnel.
The female who answered the phone seemed to have some difficulty comprehending my query; that problem is not unfamiliar to me. I was about to spell out the words for her and repeat the query when there was silence on the phone. She didn't even have the courtesy to put me on hold. I subsequently heard snickering in the background; a male voice came on and enquired as to my request.
I told him what I wanted and he began to snigger; it intensified as more animated whispering became audible over the phone. Eventually, the male began laughing uncontrollably for about two or three minutes before he regained his composure and provided a number for Joe Public which proved to be non-operational.
I was profoundly hurt by the ridicule meted out to me as a paying patron whose subscription is responsible for keeping those people in gainful employment. I felt the compulsion to tell to him that, given the rate of accidents in Trinidad, it is so easy to leave home "Abled" And end up disabled by the end of the day.
Imagine-I am remunerating these customer "Disservice" Representatives to denigrate me!
You are offering a public service and have no idea what kind of people you would be required to help. A US president once administered the affairs of state from a wheelchair. World-renowned physicist Stephen Hawking is severely disabled and is an exemplary university lecturer.
People holding these jobs need to have empathy and there is obviously room for individuals with disabilities to provide training to many categories of workers who do not have this quality. This is something for employers to consider as part of their human resource strategy.
I feel very strongly about what happened to me and firmly expect some serious action to be initiated with regard to the perpetrators.
While that type of behaviour may not receive
A legislative sanction,
It is nothing short of criminal. My tenacity will not allow my anger to dissipate until I receive a measure of restitution to ameliorate the distress I suffered.

I am not the least bit surprised at this LDS. One thing that I have noticed about Trinidadians is that they all seem to have a peculiar sense of humour.
| Rather off topic, but... I am not sure if you may remember this but many years ago, a foreigner came to Trinidad and forgot his medication; so he went to Piarco airport, somehow, ran pass security and jumped into one of the plane engines and naturally, he died. His mother explained to the media that her son realized that he had forgotten to carry his medication with him and was merely trying "to go home." I went to a party shortly after this incident and I overheard a conversation concerning this report and much to my amazement, people found the story very amusing. Sad but true! |
It is a crying shame that a disable person had to endure this puerile behaviour over the telephone and to add insult to injury, the customer did not receive an updated telephone number! Personally, I believe that TSTT stands for Terrible Service for Trinidad and Tobago. I am glad that the individual chose to voice her disgust and disappointment in the newspapers. Hopefully, someone with a conscience from TSTT, may ensure that this incident is never repeated.

No surprise in this really. I have spoken to people at TSTT that I wish I could see in person and then slap in the face, then again I have spoken with very helpful ones too, but that however is rare. I feel Trinis on the whole have no clue about these teo things: empathy or customer service because they still suffer with mental slavery and believe everyone should be treated like dogs.

The provision throughout the entire conference of sign language interpreters from both the hearing community and the Deaf community also emphasised the importance of community involvement and integration. Added to this was the fact that there was an informal roundtable discussion with persons who have Autism led by Dr Frederick Felix. No Respect For The Disabled In T&T
When it comes to the rights of people with disabilities in Trinidad and Tobago, it is time for less talk and more action.
This was the sentiment expressed by disability rights attorney and pioneer, John Wodatch during the Rotary Club of Central Port of Spain’s weekly meeting at Hotel Normandie, St Ann’s on April 30. Ref. Source 6
No Respect The Disabled T&T
Thanks for allowing me to join. A good group, hopefully it leads to action on the part of the authorities to make life easier for those who have significant challenges in society. Too often "Differently abled" Is associated with those who have physical challenges but there also is a significant part with neurological challenges.
