Who Are These Children Sealed To?

I came across this example today and I would like your feedback about it. Since most of you live in countries where you have Temples, maybe you can find out if you do not know the answer. Thanks.

What if a woman is married and sealed to her first husband, who dies after only 1 year (assume no kids). Then she remarries another honorable man, has children with him, and lives with him for the next 50 years until his death. To whom are the children to be sealed?.

To Sealed Children These Who

I guess that is one of those questions that will be revelaed at some future date. I knew a girl in a similar situation and she seemed to think she and her kids would be sealed to the kids father, even though she was sealed to her first husband who died shortly after they married.

Who Are These Children Sealed To? Studies Doctrine Mormon

From what I can tell, in all the research I have done, only a man can be sealed to more than one spouse. A woman can only be sealed to one husband/spouse. Children have to be sealed to a mother and father who are already sealed. Since there is no possibility for a sealing to happen between the woman and the second husband, their children could not be sealed to them. At least that is my opinion. This may seem extremely unfair, but the Lord God knows much better than we do. There are also other doctrines that I personally do not understand, but I feel that my loving Father in Heaven would not impose anything upon me if it did not bring me a measure of happiness and joy. I believe He will enlighten and enlarge our understanding and we will readily accept His will in all things, and that all things will be made to be "fair," for He is an omniscient and just God. I do not know for sure, but I think that the only possible sealing that these children could partake in could only take place between the woman and the first husband. We can pray and find comfort through the Holy Ghost about something like this, but I totally agree that we have to just accept that we will not be able to know all the mysteries of God in this life.

My understanding of this is similar to Dawn's. I believe the children from the second marriage are sealed to the first husband. Now, this is my belief based upon stuff I have read, but not doctrinal stuff. However, what happens if the wife dies after having children with her second husband. He remarries someone who wasn't already sealed to anyone so they are sealed in the Temple. I would think at that point the children have just as much chance of being sealed to the father and his second wife as they do to the mother and her first husband.

In fact, since I believe the sealing generally goes to the man, it is likely the children will be sealed to the father and his second wife. I am pretty sure when doing ordinance work for your ancestors that you can seal children to just the father, but I don't believe this is true of mothers. I could be totally wrong on this too, though. I will do some research when I have a chance if someone doesn't beat me to it.

In my opinion the answer lies in the eternal realm of things, I believe it is not so important who you are sealed to as much as that you are sealed. The reasons I give for this are based on history where member of the Church were sealed to the Prophets and not their own ancestors (of course this was later stopped, but shows that it was not mandated as a necessity to be sealed to one' earthly parents) and also the similarities in Priesthood ordinances - for instance it does not matter who confers the Priesthood on your head, but the fact that you now have the authority. In both a 'proof' must be given of your inheritance: in the case of the Priesthood one can show the laying on of hands right back to Christ - in a sealing one will show / or eventually show their sealing right back to Adam & Eve.

I agree with JB. The sealing is creating, in effect, a link that will be joined then with whatever other links are necessary to make the whole thing work. I think it is really fruitless to try to understand how the Lord will sort out the many twists and turns that will be part of the final tapestry. There are so many divorces, step-families, half-siblings, adoptions, etc, that apply to the whole concept of sealing, that anything we say becomes completely speculative.

However, at the same time, I know that a lot of people are very concerned about such things.

Who These Children Sealed To

This is what I was told when my parents got a temple divorce. That come judgement day I will be asked which parent I would like to go with and that would be the one I will be sealed to. Both of my parents have been remarried and sealed to different people.

Weisenberger, that sounds more like the opinion of the person who counseled them than actual Church doctrine. I don't think we know what will happen for sure in such situations. So, like we do in other matters, we speculate based upon what we think makes the most sense.

I know that we seal women to more than one man in the Temple when we do their ordinance work if they had more than one husband while they lived. We don't know with whom they will be in the eternities in such situations either. Personally, I don't think it would be fair to the child to be forced to choose between their parents. Since I think Heavenly Father is always fair, I am not convinced this is how the decision will be made. What I am sure of, though, is however it is accomplished it will be fair and all parties will be happy as long as they have done their best in life to live righteously.
