Could The Allies Have Won World War 2?

Could the allies have won World War 2 if the Congress in the United States had the same defeatist attitude that they had now in the current conflict?

1. Democrats said we lost the iraq war in the first year.
We've lost about 3800 U.S. soldiers in Iraq
We lost 405,000 Americans in WW2.

Regardless of your views of the Iraq war if we had the same criteria for victory that we have now could WW2 have been won?

That is so hard to say. Maybe they may have eventually won, but the war would have dragged its feet a lot longer. Casualties are always looked on as a measuring stick because we live in an age where the life of the soldier is viewed more high that it was then ( I will not go in depth as to why). Also, because of technology everyone expects a bomb or a missile or a grenade to solve everything.

Good point, but we often rely heavily on weapons to fight wars.

As to winning World War 2 with the attitude we have today, I believe if we (USA and Europe ) would have this same attitude back then, all of Europe would be part of the Nazi/fascist empire, Japan would now have control of China, and America would have been facing rule by imperial Japan or fascist Germany. The enemy we fought back then would have waited us out. At the point we lost 10,000 soldiers we would have declared the War lost, we would have appeased Germany by saying they could keep France and most of Europe if they just left us alone (England would have been lost too). They may have accepted this.
Imperial Japan however would have never accepted such terms. They would have wanted to destroy us and humiliate our leaders. In that War we were faced with annilation.

We are facing similar issues today with islamofacists.

I just do not think that the West is as determined to defeat todays evils as we were in the past.

Rather off topic, but...

In the world, Evil (in World War it was hitler and imperial Japan today it is islamacists) on a national level can only be defeated by stopping them by force. Hitler could not have been defeated by negotiation (it was tried by Chamberlain and it resulted in World War 2), and certain elements of islamic societies want all things Western destroyed. No amount of appeasement can stop them from doing that and they need to be removed with bombs and missiles.

Islamofacists spock.gif, that is a new word? Well, we have a dozen Threads about Islamists and Terrorism and todays modern battles so I will not make this one that save to say that the Nazis and Japanese flew their colors high so they could be identified, it is not the case with your 'islamofacists'.

Back to the Topic. To understand and answer the full scale of your question it will be necessary for us to Discuss World War II's beginnings in depth. (other Threads deal with this) I think many did not want to enter it, and some say that the US was actually looking for an excuse to enter the war and Pearl Harbor was it (there were more than enough warnings that the US could have prevented that incident). In any war there must be a reason, if you get the population vexed enough about an 'enemy' then they will support you.

I do agree do to our high Technological levels we seem to think our soliders should not die and be able to destroy all in their path.

dbackers you are right that the States would not have regrouped and put to use lesson learned from previous battles to claim victory against Japan if the same war was fought today.

When faced with a foe that is willing to fight to the last man standing it is hard to take victory unless you are prepared to completely annulate all that are now standing. In the past this was frowned on, but one could do it if no other option existed. Today in no way would the worlds governing bodies allow it. This is the second reason WWII might not have been our victory.
