My desk was inherited from my parents when they moved into a smaller house. Its a real computer desk, but way to big for my house. Its in a big L shape and has three shelves and a cabinet. I really need a smaller desk because it ends up being a catch all for papers and bills and misc computer parts.
The desk I am currently using is rather old and I purchased it used at an auction for 23$. It has multiple draws on one end with file drawer, and a cabinet on the other with a roll out shelf. The top layer is a lot of small shelves and cubby holes to cram all of my junk into. The top right of the desk however does have doors to cover two of the larger shelves which I have elected not to put back on since I have moved the desk last. It was made for a computer as it has a roll out keyboard tray in the center as well as cut outs for all of the wiring. Constructed of mostly pressed wood it weighs in at nearly 250 lbs as a whole. (I am so glad that it comes apart into three separate sections.)
Wow, bwren, I want your desk! I'm using a desk my mother bought several years ago, a Wal-Mart special that is really too small, too short, too narrow, etc. Everything is jammed crammed on top of it, and the side shelves don't go all the way to the back of the desk... so if you put something on the top shelf too far back, it falls into the drawer below, or behind the drawer if the drawer is open and then you can't close it. It's supposed to be a computer desk, but the plastic slots to put your CD-Roms in are too small to fit the jewel cases. So I took the plastic off completely, and it's just a shelf that is incidentally also one inch too short for CD-Rom cases. Yep. Time for a new desk.
The desk I have is not really a desk at all; it is barely big enough to house my 19" monitor, CPU and printer. It was a cheap one that I bought at the time with a keyboard drawer that pulls out. The mouse stays on the keyboard drawer. With the monitor on top, there is barely enough room to have anything else on there. I hope to get a bigger desk so my wife and I can both use it once she starts her career.
Our desk is about 20 inches by 4 feet. It has four drawers, and I'm pretty sure it was not made for a computer! Last summer my parents invested in an apartmnet complex and my husband helped clean out some small buildings on the property that were full of junk. This desk was among the junk. It's really not in bad condition, considering where he found it (I think it may have been the only thing that was saved of the junk). I think the top was preserved because it had a sheet of (broken) glass on the top. But we disinfected it, and it looks nice now. It serves our computer purposes for the moment, though I have to say that our 15 inch monitor barely fits on it! The printer is on the edge and the CPU is on the floor. It is really too shallow to be used for a computer.
