Prenuptial Agreement & Mormons

Do you think that it is wise to get a Prenuptial Agreement before you marry in the temple? Now you may be wondering why I did not place this in the public LDS Section, well the reason is that our Husband & Wife Board is private, and since this is similar, I wanted to keep it all the same.

Rather off topic, but...
The Husband & Wife Board is greatly underutilized! If you venture there you will be amazed at the number of eye opening aspects to marriage that you may never of thought about. It will also enable you to talk with your spouse about things that can test your strength as a couple.

It does not seem wise to me to have a prenuptial. One is setting themselves up for failure when they plan ahead of time for the marriage to fail.

I believe marriage is one of those things that you get into to for a long time. It is a Gamble I suppose not to provide some financial security if the Marriage fails, but the benefit of going in trusting each other seems to outweigh the risk

I agree, I think most times it is about trust. Can anyone say though that they truly know the heart and mind and most of all future intentions of their engaged partner? We may say that we prayed about it, and yes the answer may have been interpreted as good, but like King Saul, who was of good heart in the beginning, people change. Some look at it as a way to protect themselves and their children's assets in case of grave disagreement.

I think in one place that this does have standing is where the families of two with children are joined together. In other words a couple who came from prior relationships with children. The merger may need some kind of prenuptual agreement for the sake of the children, not really the couple.

In most cases (besides the case of mixed Families) it is worth the risk not to start out with an assumption that the Marriage is going to someday end.

I believe this, even though I have seen some people who I know personally, go through some messy divorces.

Comments: I'm LDS but I'm also a realist. If you have a lot to lose then a prenup might be the way to go. You can probably leave a will that if you die all will go to your spouse but if anything like a divorce happens - and it DOES happen - then you are protected from unnecessary financial burdens.
