FREEDMEN PROJECT HELPS TRACE ANCESTRY

Tonight, in the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia, two chairmen of the Freedmen Project Team from the Richmond Virginia Stake will speak about how African Americans can find information about their ancestors with the Freedman's Bank records. In an 11-year project, the Church compiled the Freedman's Bank records on CD, releasing the finished product--a repository of 484,000 names--5 years ago.

One of the difficult things about tracing ancestors back to Africa is the slave trade. The Middle Passage saw millions packed as sardines on ships and then sent to the Caribbean / North America, so when they landed the names and identities given were based on the choices of their masters. It is the same problem here in the Caribbean - most people cannot go back further than their grand parents. Having something to go on such as the Freedmen Project gives hope that at least some genealogy can be researched.
