Ten Years For s-xual Assault Of Teen
When I read the details of this case, it made me sick to my stomach that this beast only got 10 years in prison! This girl will never recover of such awful experience.
QUOTE A gas station attendant who "betrayed the trust" of a 16-year-old virgin by sexually assaulting her in June, 2004, has been sentenced to ten years hard labour.
The sentence was delivered by Justice Devan Rampersad against Dannyboy Ramjattan in the Sixth Criminal Court yesterday.
Expressions of relief were etched on the faces of the victim and her mother, who were present in court when the sentence was handed down.
Ramjattan, 45, of Orange Field, Carapichaima, was found guilty by a nine-member jury on Wednesday of grievous s-xual assault, but was acquitted of raping the teen.
In delivering the sentence yesterday, Justice Rampersad said he took into consideration that Ramjattan had no previous convictions.
However, Justice Rampersad noted, "The court has to balance the interest of the public when considering sentence."
Justice Rampersad said the prevalence of the offence was extremely serious since "you (Ramjattan) were a mature man in a position of trust and you betrayed her trust and caused her immense psychological harm and physical injury".
"The bleeding and swelling of the virtual complainant's private part is a huge offence and punishment of the court should reflect this. A guilty verdict was upheld and taking into consideration all these factors, ten years hard labour from the date of conviction," Rampersad ruled.
The State was represented by senior State attorney Joy Balkaran, who presented two witnesses....
