When I read this article, I was not surprised in the least. This have been going on for a while now and as Teacher myself I have witnessed kids improperly touching each other during break time between other things. But what is the cause of this demoralizing behavior of the Youth in T&T? What do you think?

international QUOTE
Secondary school students are selling sexually explicit footage of themselves for as little as $5.

The fee is paid first, then raunchy sex videos involving the students engaging in sex acts in the classroom are transferred to the customer via cellphone bluetooth.

This was revealed at a seminar on juvenile delinquency yesterday at the Faculty of Social Sciences Lounge at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine.

Head of the Unit for Social Problem Analysis and Policy Dr Daphne Phillips said it was poverty-stricken students who made the p-rn-graphy to sell in order to take care of their families.

Phillips said a study was conducted by her unit to expose the "real life conditions and experiences" of children.

Fourteen junior secondary schools were randomly selected for the study and the principal from each school chose one Form Three class as the focus.

According to Phillips, the classes then held group discussions with her unit as a main data collection tool.

"We didn't moralise them...we encouraged them to talk," Phillips said.

The students-most of whom came from single parent families-revealed the abuses which they endured.

Phillips said p-rn-graphy was prevalent in the more urban schools, whereas students from rural schools preferred other means such as stealing fruits to sell in order to make money.

Phillips said they found that in one case a student claimed to have stolen a child to make money.

The findings of the study drew a link between violence and broken homes, and were intended to inform the policy makers in society so adjustments could be made to existing policies....

This is very interesting. For one thing I do not believe children under the age of 14 need to have a cell phone. For one reason is they are not capable of handling the responsibility that comes from owning these devices. When you add on cameras to the phones all sorts of things happen and mostly none for the good of the children. I feel that if you must give a child a cellphone before the age of 14 then is should be a non camera phone and only be capable of calling 911, home and parents work or cell phones. Those that can call only 4 preset numbers is idea.

I have found that most young teens in middle school are searching for acceptance in an adult world and feel they have to try to act more like an adult. This is what makes having young teens hard. They are making a statement of this is who we are and you have to accept it.

As a parent with children in this age I see that everyday. The trick is to let them be who they want to be but give them restrictions on how their behavior is inappropriate to who they want to be. This is also the time kids feel their parents are the dumbest people on earth.

SO it does not surprise me that some kids are doing this at all

KNtoran, I agree with your opinion about teens and cel phones. Having said that, the issue here in Trinidad (where this issue is going on) is a bit more complicated than just acceptance. From the article:

QUOTE
Some responses by students to situations at home:

    * Some parents treated the girls like "housewives." (Note: a whole cultural issue here)

    * Parents arrive home late, without helping their children with their homework.

    * Excessive abuse and cursing.

    * Parents go to "passa passa" fetes (kind of sexualized parties where women dress very immodestly and dance accordingly) and leave their children unattended. Likewise, some parents take their children to passa passa and leave them to fend for themselves in the party.

    * Fathers, as well as mothers, sexually abuse their children.

    * Brothers have sex with their sisters.

Some situations in schools:

    * Teachers 'sweet talk" and touch students.

    * Teachers videotape students to make porn.

    * Students make porn and sell from $5-$20 to help support their families.

As a Teacher in Trinidad, incest is HUGE in the country even though many Trinidadians do not accept it as well as physical and mentally abuse.

Rather off topic, but...
Just to give you an idea, most parents find acceptable the use of corporal punishment in schools which was done away only some years ago, yet they are parents who come to schools insisting you beat their kids as a way to discipline them and some schools still do it. This is a whole cultural issue.

Well now I am glad I do not have kids in school over there. It is hard to understand a culture that allows this to happen. From other posts I have read I think things are going to go downhill more before change may happen. We can hope the change is for the better.

See, now I know there's something about why so many young people act that way around me...I'm going to be out with it, I was an avid porn watcher until I started noticing allot of young girls being all woman like around me.
It made me sick, really badly, I kept thinking of my sister who's eleven years younger than I am.
This topic is really sensitive for me, but as I'm thinking about it, it's a question of maturity. These girls are not mature enough to respect or understand their own bodies...it's a sad, sad day when a young innocent girl acts like a cheap hooker.
I actually stopped looking at all porn since I've begun noticing the reactions towards me from little girls...it's disgusting...I wouldn't want to hear of this nonsense from my sister.
The other thing about this and this may be a tangent, is that these same young people glorify violence...I don't know if this is or isn't the same indifferent attitude about this country that's being bred into it's youth.
Lastly, I wouldn't blame this on the parents, these kids are way too impressionable, but if that's the case, then someone needs to love them, if not for the sake of saving this island.
