Americas The Summit

According to the Ministry of Health, the US Embassy stated that public hospitals in Trinidad are good enough for Pres. Obama if he has the need to use them. But when I read the statement of the US Embassy I did not get that impression at all.

Having said that, it is interesting to note how hospitals here are good enough for Obama but not good enough for the Prime Minister. spock.gif

THE healthcare system in Trinidad and Tobago is good enough for US President Barack Obama to use if he needs it, says Minister of Health Jerry Narace.

In spite of all the negativity surrounding the medical care at the Regional Health Authorities across the island, Narace said it was ridiculous for anyone to say that the health system was not good enough.

"The US (United States) Embassy has been in touch with the Ministry of Health and they have advised us that they have full confidence in the health care system of Trinidad and Tobago. They have gone as far as saying that if something happens to President Obama, they would expect that he would be treated in Trinidad and Tobago by our healthcare system and they are going to be putting out a statement reaffirming the same very shortly," he said.

Narace assured the media gathered at Caribbean Heart Care, at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope yesterday, that they have been working around the clock to prepare the health care system for the summit.

He said the disaster preparedness programme that was adapted to International Cricket Council World Cup campaign in 2007, was now being adapted to the Summit of the Americas, and will be adapted to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) and the Caribbean Games later this year.

Speaking by telephone to the Express yesterday, Michelle Jones of the Public Affairs Section at the local United States Embassy, said they would clarify in due time the statement made in another newspaper that "the US Department of State (USDS) is strongly advising its citizens to have 'comprehensive medical and travelling insurance' as health services here were 'significantly' below US standards. The USDS also warned of 'limited' medical supplies and strikes by medical personnel".

"The embassy does not make any recommendation for healthcare services in any country because we have no medical personnel on board to do that. However, we do suggest to people who are travelling to have adequate and proper health insurance," she said.

Kamla: Summit is no state of emergency

UNC Deputy leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has called on Prime Minister Patrick Manning to state whether laws with respect to a state of emergency would be used to put security arrangements in place for the Summit of the Americas. At a post cabinet press conference on Thursday, Manning said that there are laws in the country that would allow emergency arrangements to be put in place. Ref. Source 5

Well, for those who thought in seeing Obama in person greeting locals, is not going to happen....

QUOTE

IF you are expecting to see US President Barack Obama in the flesh, shaking hands and kissing babies while he is in this country for the Fifth Summit of the Americas, you will be disappointed.

At a community meeting which the Summit Secretariat held with residents of Cascade and St Ann's on Thursday night, when a member of the audience asked whether or not the public would get to see the US president in all his glory, Dennis McComie, the night's MC and member of the Summit Secretariat's communications unit, disappointed the crowd with his wry response. "You can see him on TV," he told the gathering.

The crowd responded with exasperated signs and a resounding "No!", but McComie quickly moved on to the next question.

Environmentalist Eden Shand questioned whether he could go to the Lookout (at Lady Young Road, Morvant) with his children to wave at the delegates.

He was told there would be no restrictions on that, however.

But those hoping to get a look at Obama in this way will have little to see.

Sources have confirmed that his official vehicle (otherwise known as "The Beast") is so heavily tinted that civilians looking in will not be able to see the object of their admiration, and unless he has a special desire to meet the locals, he will be making no public appearances outside of his summit meetings.

Media reports have said the US president, who will be touching down in Air Force One, will be accompanies by his contingent of over 1,000 people, which will include everyone from his wife, First Lady Michelle Obama, to economic advisers, doctors and security personnel.

Sources told the Express that after his arrival (the time is still to be confirmed), a police detail will escort his vehicle along the West-bound lane of the Churchill-Roosevelt Highway, down to the Hyatt Regency hotel off Wrightson Road in Port of Spain, where the summit events are set to take place.

Around the Hyatt will be the Red Zone, which will be sterilised of all non-accredited individuals beforehand.

Therefore, the public will not get to see Obama when he arrives or leaves the hotel either....

Americas The Summit

Obama has been known to go out and meet the public. I have a feeling that he will try to get a chance to get out and meet the locals while he is in country. I hope that you all have a chance to meet him.

Really, I'm not interested in this Summit. If the Trinidad & Tobago government wants to flaunt pomp and ceremony they should start with their own people rather than foreigners. I would consider a better infrastructure, having electricity and water can be guaranteed daily as priority. Security and basic services should be provided in a courteous manner. Something as standard as a home can be bought without having to be a multi-millionaire. Doctors and facilities for special needs children - that's what I'm interested in.

Well, that's not what the average "Joe" seems to want. They're buying Obama T-shirts and asking whether it will be okay if they can stay by the side of the road to greet Obama because they really want to see him.

What the smart and knowledgable want is usually vastly different then what the sheeple want. For the government to listen you got to get the sheeple to want what you want.
