Best Clear Coat

After you have the wood stained what clear coat do you prefer and why?

I tend to water based product as they are easier to clean up after and I find they streak less easily. Last few projects including floor transitional pieces(from tile to laminate) I have used a diamond coat. I find it is very hard and is available in matte semi or high gloss finish.

I just use a clear varnish with oil stain, but the stain is so light that it can hardly be recognized as anything that would change the natural color of the wood. I used to use a polyurethane, but I found that it flakes after awhile, especially when exposed to heat and moisture.

Well that explains why I am now having to revisit my bathroom, it turned white. I might just use a oil stain and no top coat at all. There is a skylight and it can get warm in there.

Rather off topic, but...
I might just use a fine sand paper and remove the top coat.

Yes, oil is way better in my opinion, but it does take very long to dry, especially if it is done in cold weather. I do recommend that after the first coat dries completely that you give it a second even if you feel it does not need it - I have found this makes for a long lasting finish.
