Is There An "american Culture"?

Hi Everyone!

I thought this might be an interesting topic, as I have wrestled with it for a while now. Having children, I am attempting to build a culture of family and community, but am finding that most of what my children see and experience outside the home tells them otherwise.

Many of my friends from other countries have a culture that is conducive to the family. There is a feeling of compassion and community that Americans seem to be lacking.

Is there an American culture? Are we just following orders from clever marketing executives? Are we just too busy making sure we are making enough money to care?

For those who live outside the US...how do you see American culture?

Culturequot quotamerican There Is

Culture is a way of doing things. First if all "America" is a big place. Are you asking if there is a Western Hemisphere culture or are you asking if there is a USA culture? For both the answer would be "yes" anyway, but if you were specifically targeting the USA I would say that the country is too diverse to say that is this or that in its culture. Generally most US Citizens seem to believe in freedom and family, but at the same time you have a large cross section that teach the opposite of that. Maybe if you make some specific questions or comments I can give a better answer.

Rather off topic, but...
Within this Board there are MANY Topics in relation to the USA and Culture. Please look them over.

Is There An "american Culture"? Reviews Consumer & Travel Family Culture

Most certainly there is an American culture one that cover both the USA and Canada. To me it is bred and fueled buy the advertising and the commercial world that is always telling us what we need.

In that we have many smaller cultures also which can be broken down geographically and demographically.

For my children I resort to a small comment when they start in on look at what their friends have or at least claim to have. I remind my sons what have we done in the last 6 weeks that was fun and unique. What do you do on a daily basis that God would be very proud of? Then we discuss them and try to guess if their friend did any thing other than watch that latest movie or seen the "hottest show on TV". In the end the family culture we strive for shows its colour and they walk away content knowing they really are not missing out so much, as doing what they enjoy.

For outside of the family home we visit friends on our block try to get the children together to play games and ask parents of the children to get out with us. Create your culture set a good trend you might be surprised how many will join.

We had 12 adults and 14 children having a water fight last weekend and it started with me and my youngest son. I dug out a trench (patching basement wall) and many joined and we had fun ending in a community BBQ.
