I'm intending this thread as a place where Fantasy and Science Fiction writers can come for help, encouragement, reviews, or just to blab. I am not too sure how many people will be interested in this or how far it will go but I am willing to do all I can.

I must admit that I do have my own personal intentions for this thread, because I myself am struggling with a project that I believe in so much that I cannot let it slip away. This is the second novel that I have dedicated countless hours too, the first one never made it out of the worldbuilding process and this one now is looking to turn out the same way.

You see I am a perfectionist to the core and no matter how many stacks of papers I have written I never feel accomplished enough to move onto the next step. I guess what I am getting at here is that I am in need of advice and will do what I can to return the favor.

I am not a writer as such but I do put pen to paper sometimes and I always get carried away and before I know it I'm on a completely different subject and I have most likely forgotten what I was writing about in the first place. The best advice I can give to any writer is stay focused.

Not a writer myself but I do help on the idea's front for a friend whose a published fantasy writer. He suffers from the same problem of getting distracted. He gets around this by setting himself a word target of a min of 1000 words a day, he often does quite a bit more. He doesn't review it, he simply writes and the next day writes more. As you can imagine when he finishes the first draft is often very disjointed and not particularly interesting to read but the core's there. He spends a long time afterwards going through each chapter until it reads seamlessly.

I would love to join this topic. I am a struggling author trying to find enough time in his day to devote to his passion. With the newly arrived addition to our family I am afraid my time might get consumed even more so. Any way I look forward to bouncing ideas off of each other and what have you.

Well you are after all in a place to get ideas (not take ideas) that will help you. RPGs is one sure way as well as starting your own story in the Member Wars Board (see there for details). I would also recommending you post something in a new Thread about what you have written and then people can rate your potential.

I visited Oxford University in England, and the tour guide told me a story about JRR Tolkien. It appears that the great Tolkien wanted his works to be so perfect that every time he messed up even one letter, word, or sentence, he would tear the entire manuscript to shreds and start from the very beginning. Can you imagine how many times he wrote page 1 of the Lord of the Rings.
I find it helps when I write to begin by writing the first chapter (5-12 pages in Word) and then stop. I then spend the next week writing biographies and personalities for every character, as well as descriptions of every place and thing I mention in that chapter. Then I will print all of the Bios out and put them on tack boards all over my workspace. You will be surprised how just glancing up at something will give you just that much more insight into a character, and make them real to you, so that you can feel where they are taking the story. All of the sudden, your not writing it anymore, your watching it firsthand, and recording everything you see.
I wish you all the best of luck, it is a very large undertaking to write a novel, and even a short story. Sometimes I will write a short story just to "exercise" and think "Wow, this is kind of neat. I wonder what this story would translate out to if I made it longer." Good luck, and I hope that one day we can share all of our works here, and in the RPGs.

Alot of writers I've talked to have encouraged me to just write a little bit everyday at a time where I have some to spare. They say that if you get into this pattern, your mind will too and you will have less problems with writers block. '

Also, I think writers block stems from the writer being too perfectionistic and leaving the creative mindset to edit and fix mistakes. Rather, I think it's better to write until you can write no more and worry about editing things later.
