I would go for 'stealing is like a drug for them'
I would say that it is done out of boredom, and stealing gives them a bit of a thrill in as much as it's a big risk, and a challenge to talk their way out of it. I think because things come so easily to them, and they know they can have what they want, stealing gives them a 'bit of a buzz', the same way a drug would to an addict.
