JERRY JOHNSTON: LDS LEADER REMAINS AS ROOTED AS A WALNUT TREE

President Gordon B. Hinckley was born the same year Mark Twain passed away. It was as if the nation made a deal to trade in one aging American original for a new one. The national mourning for Twain was tempered in the Hinckley home with a celebration of life.

LDS PRES. HINCKLEY GENTLE, UNPRETENTIOUS

The president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints pulls out a pocket knife, balances the tip gingerly on his nose, flips his wrist and lets go. The blade stabs at the top of the walnut desk - an heirloom used by two previous presidents - but doesn't stick.

One of the most amazing things about Pres. Hinckley is his vigor. I am amazed that at his age he still moves up and down like a person in their 40-50s. I hope he has a speedy recovery.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - President Gordon B. Hinckley was hospitalized Tuesday after doctors discovered and removed a cancerous growth in his large intestine. After a routine medical screening, Church officials said President Hinckley was admitted to LDS Hospital Tuesday afternoon, where he underwent a successful laparoscopic surgery to remove the diseased portion of his intestine. "It is anticipated that President Hinckley will recover rapidly and resume his normal duties as the President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints," Church spokesman Dale Bills said in a statement Tuesday night.

"It was 48 years ago at this April conference that I was first sustained as a General Authority. Since that time I have spoken in every general conference of the Church. I have given well over 200 such talks. I have dealt with a great variety of subjects. But running through all has been a dominant thread of testimony of this great latter-day work."

The age of this man and the vigor he has is impressive. Elder Hunter of the Twelve was telling us in a fireside that Pres. Hinckley has cancer in many parts of his body and yet he moves around and does a lot of things. That in itself, besides his call as a Prophet is astounding.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - With a steady voice, President Gordon B. Hinckley "put the record straight" about his health during the morning session of the 176th Semiannual General Conference of the Church on Sunday and also urged members to develop greater faith. "I feel well," President Hinckley said, adding, "my health is reasonably good." He acknowledged that, as with any Church President, his life is "not his own. His mission is to serve."

Well, we all know Pres. Hinckley is 96 years old and looking in pretty good shape considering that he is not very far from 100 years! Today he has a record: President McKay and President Hinckley are now tied as the oldest prophets in the history of the church.

President Gordon B. Hinckley of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints marks a major milestone today. He has now equaled President David O. McKay in age.

President McKay and President Hinckley are now tied as the oldest prophets in the history of the church.
As of today, Nov. 2, 2006, President Hinckley is 96 years old, plus 132 days - the same age that President McKay was when he died on Jan. 18, 1970. President Hinckley is thus poised to become the oldest-ever church president Friday.

Born in Salt Lake City on June 23, 1910, he has served as the 15th president of the church since March 12, 1995, and has been a general authority for more than 48 years.
President Joseph Fielding Smith lived to be 95 and 8 months old, the third-oldest church president. President Ezra Taft Benson was fourth at age 94 and President Wilford Woodruff fifth at age 91.
While President Hinckley is approaching age 97, no other church president has displayed as much vigor and energy as he has.
