Dies Hope Bob

I have a subscription to ABCNews Nightline... they write these articles that are very familiar to my own trend of thought, so I thought I would post this here:

Nightline Daily E-Mail July 28, 2003

At age 100, he had survived almost all of his contemporaries, and leaves behind a legacy of film, television, and comedy. He will be remembered by several generations of American soldiers for his many trips to war zones to entertain the troops. We'll remember Bob Hope tonight.

I remember reading somewhere that Bob Hope was about six months old when the Wright brothers made their historic flight. That's really sort of mind-boggling. He made movies starting in the 1930s, and was a familiar figure on television into the 1970s and later. But I think that more than his movies, he is remembered for appearing, golf club in hand, before hundreds of cheering soldiers from World War II to Korea to Vietnam and even to Desert Storm.

But I think that there is a real generational split here too. Talking about him with the staff today, it's clear that for about half the country, those under the age of 35 at least, he is a name, maybe a face, and not much more. He was a major icon for my parent's generation, less so for my generation, by the time of Vietnam he was seen as a major part of the establishment. And like all things, entertainment changed.

Bob Hope Dies Sports & Fashion Music Movies

I grew up watching much of Bob Hope's movies and was able to watch a few of his tv spots (but most were in reruns).  He was one of my personal favorite comedians from back in the day.  I also thought that it was very cool of him to visit and entertain the troops while they were away at war.  To me, he will truly be missed.

Dies Hope Bob

I heard on the local news, that President Bush has asked everyone to fly their flags half-mast on Wednesday, the day of Bob Hopes' funeral.

I also caught this article on Bob Hope in the local newspaper.  It talks of his life as an entertainer and his family:

Bob Hope, ski-nosed master of the one-liner and favorite comedian of servicemen and presidents alike, has died, less than two months after turning 100.

Hope died late Sunday of pneumonia, his longtime publicist Ward Grant said Monday. Hope's family was at his bedside at his home in Toluca Lake.

The nation's most-honored comedian, a millionaire many times over, was a star in every category open to him - vaudeville, radio, television and film, most notably a string of "Road" movies with longtime friend Bing Crosby. For decades, he took his show on the road to bases around the world, boosting the morale of servicemen from World War II to the Gulf War....

Stars gather to remember Bob Hope

Mourners reflecting the range of his impact on culture -- Hollywood stars, golfers, politicians, generals and businessmen -- gathered at a North Hollywood church Wednesday for a memorial Mass for Bob Hope.

Entering church, Barbara Eden said her memories of Hope were "happiness and laughter" along with the image of him hitting golf balls off decks of aircraft carriers wherever they were abroad to entertain servicemen.

I think that it was great that he touched so many people in his lifetime and that many took the time to honor him with a memorial service.

Bob Hope Dies

I was very glad of all the work Bob did with the military men and women during his whole career. You can not metion his name and not have someone think of him going out to places of combat and entertaining the troops. He was one of the few civilians who was awarded a medal from the military for all he has done for the military. I know in the past almost 5 years since his passing there has been none that have came close to filling his shoes.
