Systematic Desensitization

Systematic desensitization

Has anyone ever used the 3 step process of systematic desensitization to overcome any phobia / fear you might have?

international QUOTE
The first step of systematic desensitization is the identification of an anxiety inducing stimulus hierarchy. The second step is the learning of relaxation or coping techniques. Once the individual has been taught these skills, he or she must use them in the third step to react towards and overcome situations in the established hierarchy of fears. Ref. Source 1

From what I understand the principles of SD is used in SERE training for the military who may find themselves in very hostile situations. Of course recreating a possible hostile environment and actually experiencing it are two different things.

Desensitization Systematic

Much of our ability to cope comes without us even knowing it, we just have to do, see, hear or say something often enough until the 'shock' factor is gone. Of course there are bigger challenges that we never seem to get over but the same method of repetition will definitely help.

Definitely easier said than done. If it were easy there would be so many of us without fear but the initial steps are always the hardest. You also need some kind of support system so when you start to pull away they can help you through it.
