Title: Solve rate of murders

Comments: Of the 350+ murders to date, how many persons were held accountable? If we go on the premise that of the 350, all were killed by a single person, then we have a slew of killers, if the answer is in the negative, then we have multiple serial killers. Either way you slice it the solve rate is something less than desired. Policing is not only a job for the police, but all citizens ought to have an eye out for illegal activities. No one ever sees anything unless it happens in their backyard. Please help the authorities clean up beautiful T&T.

Title: murders and other crimes her

Comments: It would appear that the government is waiting yet again for the present surge in murders and other crimes to subside without doing anything meaningful about the present situation which by the looks of events is only going to get much worse. The police need urgent outside help with manpower and expertise detection methods. Politicians must stop dilly dallying and senior police officer must now demand immediate outside assistance to stop especially the upsurge in slaughter of innocent officials and other citizens on this island. We need action not words.

Title: CRIME IN TRINIDAD

Comments: Dear Editor, For many years I have been trying to come to some form of conclusions as to why so many Afro/Trinidadians resort to crime and murders in on this small populated island in comparison to the other half of the population which are equally Indians. At one stage I thought it might be due the slave trade. I thought that perhaps a certain strain of slaves were imported into the island, with some sort of violent trait which was inherited by every new generation. I however cast this idea in the bin. This was because ,bearing in mind that other races in different parts of the world have also adapted the same pattern of criminal tendency ie Mexicans for example. Now I have reached my final conclusion and while poverty plays and important part in generating criminals and crime. The man cause is not just being poor as for example we here have many poor Indian citizens. I have therefore now concluded that the main cause as to why so many Afro/Trinidadians turn to crime is not because of just being poor. It is because of deprivation within the environment in which they live and the examples set by their elders, which is past down by generations suffering from government neglect ,poverty and general deprivation. Politicians here despite colour, class or creed have continued to neglect the needs of the ordinary Afro/Trinidadian because of his skin colour together mainly because the criminality in places like Beetham and Laventille. Outside the corridors of power, the police and almost all those of status and in positions of authority have continued to treat Afro/ Trinidadians as the lower class of our nation. Every Afro/Trinidad living in deprived communities has been and are continuing to be tarnished with the same brush which puts their lives and living conditions in a state of permanent stagnation. It is hard to believe that in the days of colonialism the ordinary Afro /Trinidadians lived in a more humane life ,and in a better environment. Today however, despite the fact that since independence the PNM which consist mainly of Afro Trinidadians, and held the political rein for almost half a century have done very little to improve the living conditions and environment of people of their own race residing in their strongholds such as Laventille. They because of their positions of authority simply disregard their racial identity but still implement the attitudes of their colonial masters as seeing the ordinary men and women of their own race as the lower human beings in our society. Nothing with regards to crime and criminality where Afro/Trindadians are concerned on this island is likely to be changed less government and those of status and authority despite colour, class or creed begin to see and treat Afro/Trinidaians living in poverty and deprivation as part of our nation and are entitled to share equally in the wealth of this nation. If nothing is done to remedy the situation we can only look forward to the creation more villages like Laventille with the perpetual breeding of more Afro/ Trinidadians with a tendency to becoming potential criminals because of the deprived environment in which they are confined.

Comments: Asking for help from the public to assist the police with fighting crime here is like uttering a cry in the wilderness. Folks here have lost faith in our police and in most cases see them as the enemy. It is however a shame. The causes for this view of the police those of status and in positions of authority ,is that there have been too much corruption at the higher level of our society including some in the hierarchy of the police system.
Theses offenders are never punished, and the proof is inn the pudding. You would find any of these Criminal offenders behind bars here. The public has got the impression that they are being protected both by the police and the judiciary. Moreover over the last four decades certain crime here have become acceptable. Relying on the ordinary citizen here to help the police is a no,no

Title: crime prevention

Comments: If the police here needs to get the upper hand and regain the assistance of honest citizens to prevent the escalation of crime then they need to stop protecting the upper class and supporting a corrupt judiciary. It is only when the ordinary citizens see that there is fair play in our justice system and the police that the police in particular will reap any rewards and help from such citizens. It is pointless now trying to convince ordinary men and women here that our rich and wealthy are not corrupt and need protection. Almost all the upper classes, the rich and those of status an in positions of authority are dabbling in corruption at the expense of the ordinary citizens in more ways than one. You won't find any of these upper class thieves behind bars on this island. Our prisons are brimming over with the poor uneducated petty criminals from deprived areas. This is now caused by part and parcel of the crimes generated by our professional wealthy masterminds of corruption and the example they set reflecting that crime pays here. Until something is constructively done to prevent the rich from becoming richer ,and ensuring that the poor have an equal share of our wealth and a more responsible and caring judiciary we will just keep going around in circles. The police at the end of the day if things remain in the present state the police at the end of the day will still remain as the enemy by our ordinary citizens. Remember that the more neglect and unfairness the underdogs of our nation received the more crimes will be generated.

Title: Prevention of corruption

Comments: I feel certain that among the corrupt hierarchy of our police system their are some senior officers who are honest citizens and who would like to bring about the corrupt underhand practices undertaken by the already wealthy citizens who are milking this nation of wealth gain from its resources. My advice to such senior officers is to throw down the gauntlet ,get organised and go for creating a more secure and happy nation by making an open statement on their intentions to bring in the greedy financial rogues who are creating more poverty in this nation by stealing our wealth. Such a move would immediately gain more respect for our police system and would encourage the public to assist the police in fighting crime here. Not only that, but the leaders of such a move would be considered as true Trinis and the nation and its ordinary citizens would be grateful and in perpetual debt for their heroic endeavour which in the end will prove successful

Title: Mafia influence in crime

Comments: The clear impression now given is that this country has been operating on a Mafia type administration. I am not only referring to the present administration but to previous administrations. There are too many conflicts and confrontation on matters of government important procedures that have prevented the advancement of this nation and are still doing so. Under the normal rules of democracy and bearing in mind legislation and the constitution the interference with the process of government is never so manipulated or disputed by one political side or the other merely for financial gain. There are now four glaring aspects of suspicious internal matters that supports the possibility the a Mafia type administration is implemented. The first is that despite many of the elite are caught dabbling in corruption none of the offenders are behind bars. The police and the judiciary seem to be playing an active role in protecting these criminals. The second is that on this island the leading criminal offence bar murders, kidnappings have become acceptable and no longer reported or is now in the limelight.Kidnappings seem to be the biggest (Hushed up) money spinner of organised crime here with the proceeds from paid ransoms equally shared by the operators of this crime. Third there are too many unsolved murders especially random murders together with the fact that there are too many loose killers roaming our streets without hindrance and are free to strike whenever they see fit, or instructed tom do so. Fourth. The masterminds of crime here the Mafia leaders ie( The Mr Bigs) are never caught and are allowed to carrying on doing business as usual. These are the significannot pointers that indicate that this nation is under a strong influence of a Mafia type governance especially when comparing it to other countries with similar population and police manning level. The above mentioned observations are those generally associated with any Mafia run society.
