Ex Jehovah's Witnesses

I was reading the story of how one young woman left the Jehovah's Witnesses and was allegedly abandoned by her family. In the end the young woman committed suicide. My question is this... How do Jehovah's Witnesses react to someone who leaves their beliefs?

I don't know cases personally but I've heard that you can be seriously ostracized if you abandoned the faith. I can understand if the church wants to do that but family - family need to love you regardless. Such a pretty young girl, a terrible shame.
