Alaska Zoo Welcomes Baby Muskox

Our zoo has lost quite a couple big animals this year.
Our tiger died and our elephant Maggie, was taken to California (I think). I was thinking that one of the camels died but am not sure about that one. Either way, I know this is a big thing and also noticed the article said a camel was now showing after being quarantined. I love the camels!

ANCHORAGE Alaska - A baby musk ox was born around 7 a.m. Friday at the Alaska Zoo. It born to Maxine, a 15 -year-old musk ox that was also born at the zoo.

Zookeepers say the baby seems healthy. It's staying close to mom and feeding constantly.

The baby doesn't have a name yet, because no one knows if it's a boy or girl.

"We probably won't know for another two or three weeks. It's too dangerous you don't want to separate the mom and the baby. Maxine might get a little upset if you try to take her baby away from her," zoo development director Eileen Floyd said. "So we'll wait a little bit and then we'll have the vet check the baby."

Also on display at the zoo now, the Bactrian camel, Knobby II. He was quarantined for 30 days but now anyone can see him.

The zookeepers say he likes people and is a spunky guy that likes eating spruce.

Not sure how to get a picture on but there is a really cute one at the link below.

Muskox Baby Welcomes Zoo Alaska

Well that is nice. I hope the little guy or gal grows up to be big and strong. It is nice to see that some animals can breed in captivity to help the species out.

Muskox seem to thrive here in Alaska from what I know. That being said, they are farms of them which maybe is less stressful than being in a zoo captivity--but they are very popular and the eskimos use their fur to make warm clothing.

I think we also just had a snow lion cub this year but I would have to check and verify that. I LOVE animals and wish we had the climate for African type animals but thats okay too! I am thankful for what we have!
